GettOutUK’s

Case Studies

  • Esther’s husband was prosecuted and convicted for a severe criminal offence. The last remaining part of control he had over her was refusing to give the get unless she clears his name. This was not possible as the charges were brought by the CPS, not from Esther herself. At the time Esther had contacted us, she had been waiting over 9 years. Esther had been asked to pay £80k for her Gett. In addition, her husband made demands that were impossible for her to fulfil.

GETToutUK worked with the client and contacted our legal team and after 4-6 weeks of letters back and forth an unconditional Gett was given. 9 and a half years of waiting.

  • Sarah had been divorced in the civil court for a number of years, but her ex-husband still refused her Gett. Years went by with agonising mental torture, a lot of financial pressure and strain. No one could help encourage the man to do the right thing and give the Gett.

GETToutUK accompanied Sarah to court cases, supported her on this long and painful journey. GETToutUK created a family to support each other and that was really important to Sarah and many others whilst going through this.

Thank Gd Sarah received her Gett 8 and a half years after applying for it and is now moving forward with her life.

  • Hannah was alone in this country, and was prevented from leaving by her estranged husband's family because of child custody issues. Her lawyer didn’t understand Jewish law and warned her not to raise it to the judge. She has tried to explain to the lawyer that Gett refusal is a crime because it constitutes coercive and controlling behaviour, but the lawyer won't address the religious aspects of the case. With no advisor who understood her situation, Hannah was suffering and alone.

GETToutUK was contacted. To begin with GETToutUK offered Hannah support and friendships. Hannah joined the GETToutUK support system and felt grateful and safe to be able to lean on others that can understand what she was going through. Hannah received support from a Gett campaign and with the right advisors, the Gett was granted.

  • Ellie was married for 20 years. She was a part of the ultra orthodox community in North London. Ellie left the marital home after enduring years of abuse and neglect. Her health was deteriorating and she couldn’t take it anymore. After 7 years of trying to receive her Gett and constantly being told “no” or “it’s not like you will remarry anyway….”

GETToutUK was contacted. It was heartbreaking the way this case had been handled until that point. With the blessing of the Beth Din, protests were arranged with support and security by the local police. Many people stopped and spoke to us and felt the pain of this case.

Tragically Ellie passed away from her debilitating health issues before a Gett was given. Even her dying wish was ignored and we will do everything we can to ensure, in Ellie’s memory, that no one else suffers in this heartbreaking way.

An important point to note.

In a Jewish religious divorce, both parties need to accept the divorce and either party can refuse the Gett. A man can refuse to give it and a woman can refuse to accept it. While there is equal opportunity for both sides to refuse or not accept, as with broader domestic abuse we see that this is an abuse that disproportionately impacts women.

GETToutUK is not about controlling or changing religious divorce. It is not about getting involved in the religion and dictating what religious people can and can not do with their practices. It is about helping people who are victims of abuse within a system that can not always control the players. GETToutUK tries to find the right route for each case individually.

GettOutUK advocates for both men and women that are struggling for their Getts.
